Community-based and sustainable living at fair rents, resource-efficient infill development using recyclable and sustainable building materials – the JOANES Prize initiated a process to develop a prototype for forward-looking cooperative housing built above supermarkets. A central component is the student competition, aimed at realising the best idea with the winning student team. 646 students from 63 universities took part. For the four top-prized student teams, the workshop process with experts from the field was a major benefit far beyond the prize money. The award ceremony at the renowned Aedes Architecture Forum ensured the remarkable student projects received the public attention they deserved. bbg Berliner Baugenossenschaft, a partner of the JOANES Prize and the oldest and one of the largest housing cooperatives in the capital, intends to realise the winning design, ‘Schichtsalat’, in collaboration with the team of Henny Krätzschmar & Ludwig Schwarz.
