This research focus brings together previously separate fields of knowledge to form an innovative and comprehensive perspective. It ranges from architectural and landscape heritage, through craft techniques and materials science, to the teaching of specialist skills and education in the construction sector.

At the Herrenhausen site, we feel a particular commitment to the research, conservation and sustainable development of existing architecture and garden art. We explore intelligent strategies for dealing with cultural and natural heritage in order to identify qualities in the existing built environment and highlight resources for the future in times of rapid transformation.

This research is complemented by innovative material technologies and by vocational training, life-long learning, and didactics concerning the built environment. By combining humanities’ perspectives with methods from the natural and engineering sciences, we make an important contribution to building culture and empower future generations to engage with built architecture and landscape in a sustainable manner.
