Final Conference “Tacit Knowledge in Architecture”

The conference at ETH Zürich explores tacit knowledge in architecture culture, fostering scientific exchange through lectures, debates, and object sessions. Moderated by Prof. Dr. Margitta Buchert and Klaske Havik.

Architecture culture relies heavily on tacit knowledge, which is crucial for the conceptualization, design, construction, and understanding of buildings and cities. It shapes architectural education, distinguishes design offices, and facilitates collaborations among various professionals.

Despite its significance, our understanding of tacit knowledge in architecture is limited. Research in this area has gained momentum recently, but there is still much to explore. Questions about the roles of tacit knowledge, its relationship with other forms of knowledge, and its ability to foster interdisciplinary communities remain unanswered.

To address these issues, the ITN 'Communities of Tacit Knowledge: Architecture and its Ways of Knowing' is organizing a three-day International Conference at ETH Zürich from 19th to 21st June 2023. The conference aims to delve into tacit knowledge in architecture culture, fostering scientific exchange through lectures, debates, and both "paper sessions" and "object sessions." The latter will focus on a diverse range of objects representing tacit knowledge, including scale models, mock-ups, plans, drawings, details, letters, and digital-born objects, which will be showcased in the exhibition "Unausgesprochenes Wissen/Unspoken Knowledge/Le (savoir) non-dit".

Keynote Speakers

Prof. Dr. Elke Krasny, Professor for Art and Education at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna

Prof. Dr. Harry Collins, Distinguished Research Professor at Cardiff University

Paper and object sessions

The conference includes three “paper sessions” and three “object sessions”. The paper sessions will consist of 20-minute presentations followed by a short discussion moderated by the session chair. The object sessions are based on the contributions presented in the exhibition “Unausgesprochenes Wissen/Unspoken Knowledge/Le (savoir) non-dit”. After 10-minute presentations of the contributions, speakers of the object session will engage in a 25-minute discussion with their panel, moderated by the chair. All speakers are invited to present slides in both types of sessions.
