The project "Cooperative Hinterland. A collaborative revitalisation of peripheral areas" focuses on the hinterland of the island of Usedom in north-eastern Germany (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). It is characterised by a very small-scale settlement structure, a lack of housing and out-migration. With the help of new commons to be established, the design shows how the development of rural structures can be advanced in a targeted manner and conceived as inter-municipal co-operation. The focus is on the careful further development of existing buildings (e.g. prefabricated buildings or an old warehouse) and the preservation of locally specific characteristics. New housing and utilisation models are used to transfer urban lifestyles to rural areas
